An Auditor’s Little Piece of Advice

Have you ever felt exhausted doing overtime and overnight works? Have you regretted joining an auditing firm as your stepping stone, in the first place?  Have you thought of quitting because of tight deadlines and unbalanced financial statements?  Have you thought of leaving because of your client relations?  These are the common concerns of those who are already in the complex professional world of Accounting.

I have been in the auditing firm for about one and a half years now and I am still baffled with my future career and professional growth.  There are a lot of things going through my mind regarding my current situation, e.g. salary increase, balanced and social life, sleep deprivation, health consciousness, laziness, frequent travels, etc.  This actually prevented me from doing an efficient and effective audit engagements recently; but don’t get me wrong, I am actually writing this not to persuade you to leave, but it is other way around.

After the considerable experience auditing firms bestow to us, we tend to resign and venture for other opportunities.  Hence, we failed to realize the massive amount of skills and expertise auditing firms are extending to us.  In fact, we are still privileged to have been part of it.  Given the high unemployment rate here in the Philippines, we are still fortunate to have stable work, just compensation, and fulfilling job description.

Once we freed ourselves from this limbo, it is true that there are countless opportunities available to us out there.  High-paying works abroad, managerial and supervisory positions, valuable time for further studies such as law, masters and other certifications will be several of the benefits that we can obtain if we leave with solid experiences.  To reiterate, by ‘solid experience’ we mean that we already practiced dealing and coping up with various client’s account, leading and handling staff personnel and most importantly, continuous learning and honing of knowledge as the standards and regulations itself are constantly changing.

Have you ever felt exhausted doing overtime and overnight works?  Have you regretted joining an auditing firm as foundation, in the first place?   Have you thought of quitting because of tight deadlines and unbalanced financial statements?  Have you thought of leaving because of your client relations?  Well, if you still answered ‘yes’, better think again.  No matter where we go, we are still tasked to do the same things since we are already accountants. There is no more escape to this harsh reality.

Others call our profession, ‘job’; but for us, we call it ‘life’.
